Writeblr (Re)Intro… Again

image

So… hate to be that writer, but I’m redoing my intro! I know I did this only a couple months ago, but how I feel about my WIPs and how I want to present them has changed a bit! So this is just an updated version.

Anyways!!

The name’s Josephine, but feel free to call me Jojo (pronouns are she/her), your local penguin and bird monster enthusiast!Β

I’m in my early twenties, I’ve a February birthday, I am from the Midwestern United States, and am currently in college getting a degree in Writing and Applied Arts with an emphasis in editing and publishing, as well as a minor in History. I tend to be busy busy busy during semester, so in my free time I like to doodle and write silly little stories.

(NOTE: I will NOT interact with people under 18, BUT you’re still welcomed to follow my blog! Just note that I won’t interact lmao)

My art and writing updates I post a lot on my social media accounts, which are as follows:

Instagram: jojo.penguin.art

Twitter: JojoPenguin_Art

TikTok: jojo.penguin.writes

Discord:Β Jojo the Rad Penguin#3942

Tumblr: my DMs and ask box are always open!πŸ’›

I am ALWAYS down for chatting with and meeting other writers, and engaging with others’ content!! The primary genres I work with are:

- Horror (in varying genres, but primarily Gothic)
- Paranormal
- Monster Romance (I’m aroace as hell, so expect all my romances to be pretty β€˜clean’ - AKA no erotica to be found here!)
- Historical Fiction
- Light Fantasy

If any of these genres interest you, feel free to keep on reading about my WIPs below the cut! Now about my general writing style…

Most of the stories I write are inspired by two things: fairytales and horror. A majority of my WIPs are either directly inspired or loosely based on some fairytale, folklore, or myth, and most are part of some genre of horror, whether it be Gothic, psychological, folk, survival, or supernatural. Also a lot of my writing influence comes from authors like Angela Carter, Sarah Waters, Caitlin Starling, Shirley Jackson, and Robin McKinley.

A list of my WIPs are below the cut!

KING HARE

This was one of my first posts on this blog, and recently, I decided it was long overdue to create a single, concise (re)post with links to each individual part!

This was for my illustration project for college (which means it’s now almost a year old…yikes!) based on an original story/characters of mine; and loosely inspired by Shakespearean tragedy…because who doesn’t love a good ol’ tragedy narrative every now and then?

(I’ll repost this with a breakdown of the story itself in more detail in a text-post!)

books don’t really feel magical to me anymore, and it makes my heart hurt

hello dear friend, I’m a librarian and books also did not feel magical to me for a time. there were so many of them that I kind of became numb to literature, especially during weeding season.

but good news: they are now magical yet again.

these are just what helped me:

  • finding books I really liked, aka changing the genres I were reading it, bc it turns out I had outgrown them a bit
  • not telling anyone I was reading. not on goodreads, storygraph, instagram, nothing.
  • taking my time. not rushing the reading.
  • but most importantly: having deep, passionate discussions about books with other people. even books I hated. in book clubs or creative writing class didn’t matter. just surrounding myself with people to whom books are also magical.

it could be that you’re also burnt out and need some rest, or maybe to rethink what you want from books. but I care very much about literature, in a magical and a political sense, and I just wanted to give my two cents.

good luck ❤

I’ve always been a big Poe fan and a big T. Kingfisher fan, so I was thrilled to find out she’s written her own take on The Fall of the House of Usher.

This spooky little book has all the gothic Victorian vibes of the original along with some new sci-fi concepts and a non-binary protagonist. While I loved seeing things from Alex’s viewpoint, Maddy was the character who I really wanted to paint. She’s a little bit crazy, a little bit dead, and absolutely fantastic.
